The University was the first in the world to offer majors in computer games and ethical hacking, and we are one of the top games University's in Europe — listed in the Princeton Review's 'World's Top 25 Games Universities' for an eighth year in a row. Our graduate games programs are ranked top 10 in the world.
With around 4500 students representing 60+ nationalities, we are one of Scotland's smallest university communities. The tightknit nature of life at Abertay and the supportive environment mean we regularly feature at the top of student satisfaction league tables, including National Student Survey and Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide.
Abertay University has been ranked Scotland's top modern university for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey (NSS) 2024. For the second year in a row, Abertay was the highest-ranked modern university in the country on the survey's key measure of overall student satisfaction. The University also had several success stories at individual programme level, in addition to being ranked top Scottish modern for Academic Support, Learning Resources, and Organisation and Management. Abertay Students' Association's work was also recognised with a ranking of top Scottish modern for Student Voice.
Abertay's teaching focuses on STEM subjects, business and social sciences, but it is perhaps best known for its world class reputation in videogames education and cybersecurity.
The University places a strong focus on professional development. The games programs are designed to harness creativity through practical project work. 'Thinking outside the textbook' allows our students to choose their own path, giving them the opportunity to apply knowledge to real world environments. Videogames students benefit hugely from studio simulation and team—based development, ensuring confidence and a high level of ability upon graduation.

Off-Campus Opportunities
Dundee is a beautiful, thriving city located on the north bank of the mighty River Tay.
Its reputation as a culturally rich, welcoming and exciting part of Scotland is quickly spreading across the world.
The Wall Street Journal named Dundee as one of its top 10 places to visit, and lifestyle magazine, GQ, called it "Britain's coolest little city." The Sunday Times newspaper has hailed Dundee Scotland's best place to live.
The city is perfectly placed to enjoy the whole of Scotland and the rest of the UK. The capital, Edinburgh, is an hour to the south, and Glasgow is just over an hour away. London is five hours away by train. The world-famous Scottish Highlands are also just a short journey from the city.
The UK's videogames pedigree is immense, and is more valuable than the music and film industries combined. There are a number of games development clusters across the UK hosting global companies such as Activitsion/Blizzard, Epic, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft. Some of the best performing games on the planet have been developed in the UK and studios in Scotland are responsible for some of the most successful titles in the world. Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption are developed by Rockstar North in Edinburgh, mobile titles like Bloons and Angry Birds and the console version of Minecraft are developed here in Dundee.
Dundee is one of a series of a major games hubs across the UK and really punches above its weight in the industry. Packed to the brim with award—winning studios, the city's reputation as one of the UKs foremost games makers is going from strength to strength. Studying a games degree at Abertay University not only guarantees you a high quality education, but gives you the chance to immerse yourself in a city that really gets it when it comes to videogames development.
It's the first UK city with UNESCO City of Design status thanks to its varied contribution to video games, biomedical research and comics — Dundee is the birthplace of Lemmings, Grand Theft Auto, and one of the UK's most best known comic book publishers, DC Thomson.
